Breastfeeding is best for babies and provides many benefits. If you are a breastfeeding mum or mum-to-be who’s planning on breastfeeding, it’s important that you eat a healthy, balanced diet. You should also be aware that combined breast and bottle feeding in the first weeks of life may reduce the supply of your own breastmilk, and reversing the decision not to breastfeed is difficult. The social and financial implications of using an infant milk should be considered. Improper use of an infant milk or inappropriate foods or feeding methods may present a health hazard, so if you decide to use an infant milk be sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions for use carefully. Failure to follow the instructions could make your baby ill. Always consult your doctor, midwife or health visitor for advice about feeding your baby.

Anti reflux milk

Reflux & regurgitation

Cow & Gate anti-reflux is a thickened formula, designed to reduce the number of episodes of reflux and regurgitation. This formula contains carob bean gum, which gives the milk a thickened consistency on mixing and ensures the liquid remains thick in the stomach, helping the feed to stay down.

Cow & Gate anti-reflux

Cow & Gate anti-reflux is a food for special medical purposes. It's suitable for bottlefed babies for the dietary management of frequent reflux and regurgitation. It should only be used under medical supervision, after full consideration of the feeding options available, including breastfeeding. Suitable for use as the sole source of nutrition for infants from birth, or as part of a balanced diet from 6 months.

Preparation & storage

  • 1

Wash hands and sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers’ instructions

  • 2

Boil 1 litre of freshly run water. Do not use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water.

  • 3

Measure the required amount of boiled water into a large sterilised bottle. Seal bottle and allow to cool for 45 minutes.

  • 4

Using the scoop provided, level off the powder with the built-in leveller. Do not press/heap the powder.

  • 5

Add one scoop to every 30ml (1 fl oz) of boiled cooled water. Add the correct number of scoops to the water. Adding too many or too few scoops can be harmful.

  • 6

Replace seal on bottle and roll the bottle upright between the palms of hands – roll it strongly for 5 seconds. The time between adding the scoops and rolling the bottle should be as short as possible.

  • 7

Shake the bottle for 20 seconds and then leave to stand for 7 minutes to allow it to thicken. Turn the bottle upside down just before feeding and test the temperature on your wrist.

How is Cow & Gate anti-reflux different from other milks?

  • It contains carob bean gum, an ingredient that thickens the formula when it's mixed and ensures that the formulas stays thick in the stomach, helping the feed to stay down

What kind of teat should I use?

Because Cow & Gate anti-reflux is thicker than other milks, it’s recommended that you use a single hole fast-flow teat.

When can I expect the symptoms to improve?

Every baby is different – you may notice that their symptoms start to improve after a few days, but for some babies it may take longer. If your baby's symptoms don't improve after 2 weeks, or if you have any other concerns, then it's best to get advice from your health visitor or GP.

Will I notice any changes in my baby?

The ingredients in Cow & Gate anti-reflux mean the consistency of your baby's stools may change. However there’s no need to worry as this is perfectly normal!
