Choosing a baby name is an exciting but very personal decision that can take a lot of careful thought. Knowing your baby will live with the name you choose means there’ll probably be lots of discussion! Don’t get stressed if you can’t immediately agree on a name – that’s perfectly normal. Just remember to keep it fun. This information will help give you some ideas on how to choose a baby name.

Tips on choosing a name

Write a list of your favourite baby names. From time to time go back over it. You’ll find some names you no longer like and new ones that have popped into your head so refresh your list. Don’t panic if you still have a few baby names to choose from as the due date draws closer. Many people can’t make the final choice until they actually see their baby. Whatever you pick, it’s important that both your partner and you are in agreement over the chosen name and when to reveal it.

These additional tips should help you complete your list of baby names and make that all-important final choice:

  • Try baby naming books and websites for ideas.
  • Is there anyone you would like to remember? How about family naming traditions? Or perhaps a place or flower?
  • Short first names tend to go with longer surnames and vice versa.
  • If you’re going for a middle name, try mixing and matching your chosen first and middle names. One name can sound quite different when put next to another.
  • Say your chosen baby name over and over again to see how it feels – do you get tired of it?
  • Check to see how the name will sound if it’s shortened.
  • Ask friends and family for inspiration.
